Have patience – especially at first.
Breastfeeding requires a lot of patience in several areas.
You may have to wait a few days before you start producing milk, and that is okay. Some mothers’ milk comes in after two or three days. Others have to wait four or five days. This is normal, but if you become concerned, a lactation consultant will be able to help you with any questions you may have.
Once you’ve begun breastfeeding, you will most likely find that the process requires patience. It will take time for it to become comfortable, as you and your baby learn which latch and hold works best for the two of you.
Breastfeeding is an adjustment, so as you learn about what works best for you and your baby, focus on the small victories you experience and know that coming to a place where breastfeeding feels comfortable and natural takes time.
Drink a lot of water frequently
It is important to stay hydrated because your body needs a lot of water in order to produce milk. It may be especially useful to carry a water bottle around with you at all times until your body adjusts to producing milk.
Plan ahead, and stay attentive to your baby.
Your baby will probably need to be fed between eight and twelve times every day. It is important for your baby's health, as he grows, to eat often. Usually, you will be able to tell when your baby is hungry. Watch for signs your baby makes like reaching or looking for your nipple or putting her hand in her mouth. Stay alert to these signals, and be ready to feed your baby when you see signs like these.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
It’s okay if breastfeeding doesn’t happen with the ease and beauty you pictured it would. Having the help and support you need is important, and you shouldn’t shy away from seeking support even before your baby is born.
Getting help early on will make breastfeeding easier. There are specially trained experts called lactation consultants, who will teach you all of the things you need to know about breastfeeding, making it a more comfortable and enjoyable experience.
